Tuesday 8/30/11

Today we took our 1st ISAT Math practice test!!!! For many students reading words problems seems to be a challenge. This is a hard skill to master in 3rd grade. We will work really hard in being successful with word problems in Math.

Monday Homework 8/29/11

We are working on learning to visualize as we read. Toady we read the book "Have You Seen Bugs?" without looking at the pictures, to create our own mental pictures. We also took our 1st ISAT practice Reading test, to gets students comfortable with reading passages and answering questions. This was a challenge for most, it seems like students had a hard time keeping focus. However, we will continue to practice and get ready for ISAT!


Homework:

Spelling: 4x each

Reading: 15 min log

Math: pg 3 #1-15

Some students have 5 x each  on their Math Facts Timed Test.

Weekend Homework!!!

Hi! It was great meeting the parents that came out to Open House. Thank you for taking the time to come learn about what goes on in 3rd grade. Today we took our Spelling and Reading test. We will take our Math test on Monday on Probability. Also, please help your child with their research project about their community.

Homework 8/25/11

Hi! Today we worked on our 1st writing piece! We worked on writing complete paragraphs and making sure our writing included juicy details. We also had a fun Science Lab with temperature and volume. Students worked with a thermometer and ice cubes.

Wednesday Homewok 8/24/11

Today we revisited the story of The Man that Walked Between the Towers! We also worked on selecting books that are "just right for us" to read. In math we worked on probability. In Social Studies we work on reading a map and using a scale.

Homework:

Spelling: You Pick 2 more (we did 1 yesterday, so 1+2= 3 activities)

English: pg 54 #1-5 (we did 5 together so you only have 10 left)

Tuesday Homework

We had a fantastic day! Everyone was busy learning and productive. We worked on probability in Math. We learned about matter in Science. We learned about understanding our community in Social Studies. In addition, we read the story of "The Man that Walked Between the Towers" in Reading!

Weekend Homework 8/19/11

Today we had our 1st Test Day!!!! Friday's are really important and please make sure your child tries to make every Friday to school. Students who are absent on Friday's take test on Monday... which is more "thinking days" where material can be forgotten. We had our Spelling Test, Reading Test, and Math Test today.

Homework:

English Packet: This is a review of this week's lessons taught "What is a Sentence?"

Reading Log: EVERY night, this includes Saturday and Sunday :)

Reminder: I sent a note home asking for pictures that students can decorate their Writer's Notebook. We will be decorating our notebooks next week!!!! Notebooks will be returned at the end of the year.... but once pictures are stuck on they won't come off. (copy paper printed pictures work great too!)




MISSING HOMEWORK NOTES: These notes go home on Fridays with attached work to be completed. Your child has until Monday to complete work and get note signed. I will only except work that is signed. Please speak to your child about completing their work every night.

Homework 8/16/11

Today we worked on word problems in Math. These can be pretty challenging but ISAT will be full of word problems, so please work with your child. They can draw a picture, make a table, or solve mathematically. Have students follow these steps....
1)Read the problem slowly
2)Think about "What is happening? What am I suppose to find?"
3)Re-read the problem again
4) make a plan
5) solve your plan
6) write you answer in a sentence

Homework 8/10/11

Today in reading we read Frog and Toad and learned more about the differences between the two. We learned about character traits and our own personalities. In writing we began to write a reflective piece on who "we are" as a person. In math, we learned about graphing and working with data (range, median, mean, and mode).

Homework:
Spelling: 10 "3rd Grade Quality" sentences (no short little sentences)

Phonics: WB (workbook pg) 7-8 and 13-14

Reading: 15 min log (EVERY NIGHT)
