Winter Break!

We had an awesome day today! We took all our test in the morning and then started the holiday festivities!!! We made a reindeer ornament, sang holiday songs, ate pizza, lots of treats, and watch our video for our winter assembly! The video is upload on the school website! Check us out!


Homework:

Your child has been learning a lot in class in preparation for the ISAT tests coming up at the end of February.  To help your child maintain what has been taught already over the 3-week break, we have compiled a homework packet that reinforces skills and strategies learned in class.

In addition your child is required to read and complete 2 book reports. It’s so important that your child READS, READS, and READS! I have placed two leveled books in a zip block bag. Every book is at your child’s level so they will be able to read the text. Please have your child complete the required reading and book reports by Monday, January 9^th, 2012.

Winter Assembly on Thursday 12/15/11

Hi! Our class will be performing in the Winter Assembly this Thursday! There will be 2 shows 9:30am and a 1:00pm. We hope you can make it!!!!!!

Students need to wear: Jeans for bottoms (Jean or balck skirt with tights for girls is okay too) and top should be a nice Red OR Green shirt.

Hi! Today we started our Science Fair project!!!!! We are working with House Plants and testing if they grow healthier in sand, gravel, or soil. Today we had a busy day!!!!! Students worked really hard on finishing up their poster boards and worked in groups on making their 3D representation on their Native American Region. We also learned and worked on writing paragraphs with turkey facts. Finally, we took are Chapter 4 Math test that will be in tomorrow's "Friday Folder" for signatures.

Hi! Today we read the story Boundless Grace. It is a story about a little girl whose parents are divorced and is learning to understand that families are what you make them. We will continue this story onto next week, since it is a short week for Thanksgiving. In math we worked on column addition and regrouping in the hundreds! Hi! Today in Math we worked on word problems. Students were taught a neat way to set up an equation and solve the missing numbers to equal a given sum. Ask them to teach you how!
Today students worked on NWEA Math centers that helped them with measurement based on their needs. The link for extra practice is located on the side bar under NWEA Math we are working on "measurement." This site has great practice for all areas. You can use the NWEA scores from parent-teacher conferences  to match-up the activities.

Today we had a busy day of catching up. In Math students learned to regroup the ones and the tens. In reading and writing, we worked on Reading Extended response through reading FRIDA. Students learned about the artist Frida Khalo. In Social Studies, students are studying Native American tribes in groups.

Today we read the story "The Keeping Quilt" by Patricia Polacco. The story is about a quilt that is passed on through generation by generation. When we read the story students had a hard time understanding great-great-grandparents, great-grandparents and grandparents and family tree. At home, I encourage you to talk to your child about their family tree. In Math we are working on adding with regrouping!!! In social Studies we work on creating a model of the globe as we study the continents and the oceans.

We are working on learning to visualize as we read. Toady we read the book "Have You Seen Bugs?" without looking at the pictures, to create our own mental pictures. We also took our 1st ISAT practice Reading test, to gets students comfortable with reading passages and answering questions. This was a challenge for most, it seems like students had a hard time keeping focus. However, we will continue to practice and get ready for ISAT!

Hi! Today we worked on our 1st writing piece! We worked on writing complete paragraphs and making sure our writing included juicy details. We also had a fun Science Lab with temperature and volume. Students worked with a thermometer and ice cubes.

Wednesday Homewok 8/24/11

Today we revisited the story of The Man that Walked Between the Towers! We also worked on selecting books that are "just right for us" to read. In math we worked on probability. In Social Studies we work on reading a map and using a scale.

Spelling: You Pick 2 more (we did 1 yesterday, so 1+2= 3 activities)

English: pg 54 #1-5 (we did 5 together so you only have 10 left)

Tuesday Homework

We had a fantastic day! Everyone was busy learning and productive. We worked on probability in Math. We learned about matter in Science. We learned about understanding our community in Social Studies. In addition, we read the story of "The Man that Walked Between the Towers" in Reading!

Monday Homework

Today we worked on looking into our Reading Lives.... we discussed the types of books we like and the type of reader we are. In Math we are working on probability. In Science we are learning about matter.

Weekend Homework 8/19/11

Today we had our 1st Test Day!!!! Friday's are really important and please make sure your child tries to make every Friday to school. Students who are absent on Friday's take test on Monday... which is more "thinking days" where material can be forgotten. We had our Spelling Test, Reading Test, and Math Test today.

Homework:

English Packet: This is a review of this week's lessons taught "What is a Sentence?"

Reading Log: EVERY night, this includes Saturday and Sunday :)

Reminder: I sent a note home asking for pictures that students can decorate their Writer's Notebook. We will be decorating our notebooks next week!!!! Notebooks will be returned at the end of the year.... but once pictures are stuck on they won't come off. (copy paper printed pictures work great too!)

A day full of learning!!!!!!!! In Math we worked on bar graphs and order pairs. Tomorrow is our 1st Math test on graphing and data! In Science we had our 1st lab on measuring volume to understand matter.

Homework 8/16/11

Today we worked on word problems in Math. These can be pretty challenging but ISAT will be full of word problems, so please work with your child. They can draw a picture, make a table, or solve mathematically. Have students follow these steps....
1)Read the problem slowly
2)Think about "What is happening? What am I suppose to find?"
3)Re-read the problem again
4) make a plan
5) solve your plan
6) write you answer in a sentence

In class we read the story Miss Nelson is Missing during reading. We worked on writing sentences during English. In Math we worked with making and analyzing line plots.

Phonics: Finish up center pages WB 17-18 and 21-22 (most students finished in class)

Homework 8/10/11

Today in reading we read Frog and Toad and learned more about the differences between the two. We learned about character traits and our own personalities. In writing we began to write a reflective piece on who "we are" as a person. In math, we learned about graphing and working with data (range, median, mean, and mode).

Homework:
Spelling: 10 "3rd Grade Quality" sentences (no short little sentences)

Phonics: WB (workbook pg) 7-8 and 13-14

Reading: 15 min log (EVERY NIGHT)
