Monday 1/30/12

Hi! Today the students took part in a really fun Math project. Students worked together to make math shapes for polygons and solids out of marshmallows and toothpicks! We are also reading the novel Because of Winn Dixie in class. This book is read aloud in class, but students are welcomed to re-read the chapters for their reading log.

Thursday and Long Weekend Homework 1/26/12

Hi! Sorry for the late post but the school's internet was down this evening. Today we began reading the novel Because of Winn Dixie. We also learned about solid figures in Math.

Homework:

Friday Folder: Please review Math Test and Reading Test, sign and return on Monday

Weekend Packet: Math "Time" Review, Lines, and Re-read the story The Mysterious Giant of Barletta and answer the questions at the end of thestory. We read this story in small groups this week. Students who struggle or would just like to follow along to the story can listen to the story by clicking the link on the right under Listen to Class Read Alouds. (I taught students how to access this today in class).

Wednesday 1/25/12

Hi! Today in reading we worked on learning how to use the index, glossary, table of contents, and fun facts to learn more about a topic. In math we worked on quadrilaterals! In writing we are learning the difference between a narrative and essay writing!

Homework:
Spelling: make sure all You Pick Three is done and study words for test tomorrow

Math: WB 105

Writing: Record conversations you overhear in your family. Record a conversation in which one person claims a big idea and then supports that idea with reasons. You’ll need to prompt people to talk in this way. If you know your father worries about the president’s decision, ask him what his reasons are. Collect several overheard essays!

Reading: 20  min log and finish centers from the week (most students finish their center work ib class throughout the week )

Phonics Center: pg 97-100

Math Center: Time center start and finish (4 different times on conctrustion paper)

Monday 1/23/12

Hi! This week's story is Morning Meals Around the World. This unit in reading students will be reading expository non-fiction. It is really important that students are exposed to a variety genres. Also, in Math we will be working on Geometry!!! I am also excited to inform you that we are starting our Essay unit in writing! At the end of the unit students will write a 5 paragraph personal essay!

Tuesday 1/17/12

Hi! This week's story is Wilma Unlimited. In Math keep practicing "time" and elapsed time. This is a hard skill that is guarantee to be on ISAT. We also are working on food chains in Science. In writing we are staring our unit on essays. At the end of the unit students will have written a 5 paragraph essay!!!!

Thursday 1/12/12

Hi! Today we read Dogzilla and worked on analyzing the writer's craft. I encourage you to click on the link to the right, for a Dogzilla presentation. In Math we are working on elapsed time. This is a difficult skill for students. Please work on elapsed time at home by simply asking question like "If we start a movie at 3:45 and it ends at 4:20 how long was the movie?" or "If it's 2:30 now what time will it be in 50 minutes?" The more practice they get with this the better. Thanks!

Tuesday's Homework 1/10/12

Welcome back!!!!!!!!!! Hope everyone enjoyed there wonderful break! Today, we worked on getting back into routine. We will be reading non-fiction text for the next couple of weeks. ISAT is full of non-fiction text. Also, in math we will be working on time. You can help your child by asking them to read the time or show you what a certain time looks like. All students went home with paper clocks today so they can practice with time. Some language we are using in class is "quarter after ___" or "quarter before __" "half past __"

Spelling: You Pick 3

Math: Workbook pg 83

Santa Letters: 2 paragraphs (introduction and thank you for each gift) At least one full page. Santa letters should be about "school Santa gifts"
